The Untimley Demise of a Nice Chef's Knife
If you like (or in my case - LOVE) to cook, you've probably got
your favorite chef's knife, right?
For "projects" that include some of my favorite recipes and
experimentation with new one, my personal favorite is the
J.A. Henckels Pro "S" 10 inch chef's knife. This
wonderful chef's knife is fully forged from a single piece of
high carbon, no-stain surgical steel for maximum strength,
balance and heft. Its triple riveted traditional-style handle is
smooth, durable and easy to hold. The knife is
guaranteed for a lifetime of use and (in MY opinion) represents
the absolute finest in German cutlery. Needless to say, I paid
a pretty prenny for it. I take exceptionally good care of it,
hand washing it, and placing it in its own drawer.
However, I have (or had, until yesterday) another chef's knife
that I kept handy in case I needed a knife really quick or for
a minor cooking project. Something VERY inexpensive, dishwasher
safe, and "no big deal" should something happen to it. In other
words, I'm extremely attacthed my Pro "S", but (I thought) NOT
to this cutlery.
I have no clue as to the brand or orgin. I only paid a few dollars
for it at a local dollar-type store. The knife had a nice weight and
"feel" to it, so I purchased it almost a year ago. It provided
me faithful service, never broke, chipped, or let me down.
Sadly, my cheap little chef's knife encountered a horrid fate in my dishwasher!
For some reason, it came loose from its secure spot and the handle
found its way to the heating element during the drying cycle. I,
sadly, was unaware of its demise until it was too late. The photo
makes it look better that it actually does.
I didn't realize how attacthed I'd become to this faithful and
cheap chef's knife. I guess I'm going to have to give the poor thing a
decent burial.
